Step-by-step Guide to Writing Blog Posts that Generate Traffic to Your Website
This guide is intended for advanced users who have already figured out where to write their blogs, where to host it and are now looking to generate traffic to their blog posts. Following this step by step guide with actionable to do list allows you to write effective blogs and with time, you will increase traffic to your website or blog posts.
Before writing about anything you first must understand your audience. Who are you writing for? We refer to this as Search Intent. What is the user looking for when they search for the keyword that you are writing about. This is very important to generate traffic because if someone is searching for “how to write a blog” they are interested in a guide on how to do it rather than a page that sells blog websites.
The best way to identify the search intent is to simply do a search for that specific keyword you are writing about. Let’s first start with the 3 pillars of Search Intent.
- Type of content
- Format of content
- Angle of content
Types of content and how to use each one
There are two primary types of contents that we defined here. Each type of content serves a different search intent in the overall process of user’s journey to a purchase.
- Blog Posts
- Product Pages
Blog contents are usually geared towards informational content knowledge related content. Usually the blog contents are served when users are searching with keywords including “how to” as this tells the search engine that user is looking for a video or blog post that shows them how to do that specific task. Let’s go through an example.
If you are searching how to fix a water heater, you will see that all the first page results are either blog posts or video posts discussing how to fix a broken water heater. Product pages are not displayed here since they are irrelevant to the user’s search intent. Another example is searching for AA 1670, this tells the search engine you are looking for flight information on American Airlines flight 1670
These pages are generally related to keywords that are specifically searched when user’s intention is to make a purchase. For example, if you search model number of a product or search for name of a product. This tells the search engine that you are looking to make a purchase and therefore, serves product pages. Let’s go through an example.
If you are searching for Samsung 75″ TV, then the user’s intention is to make a purchase and not to fix a broken TV, therefore the search engine will display product pages from different websites that allows you to purchase the TV.
Mastering the Content Format of Blog Posts to Generate Traffic
There are multiple formats that you can use when writing a blog article. There are comparison pages, for example, Utiliko vs NetSuite, review pages, for example, reviews of Utiliko. Before you start writing a blog post, search your keyword and analyze the results of the first page. If the first page is full of high domain authority players, it is much more difficult to rank for that specific keyword and takes much longer.
Generally mixing your blog with step by step guides, videos and pictures will attract more traffic to your posts.
Angle of content for Increased Traffic
The angle of content is a narrow focus of who the reader is. For example, if you are writing about starting a business, the angel of the content is for first time business owners. Now that we have the angle of the content, we want to further our chances of ranking by focusing on user’s intent. Continuing with our example, we want to focus our title and meta descriptions with key phrases that attracts the attention of searcher, for example, a simple, step by step guide on how to start a new business with a check list. This allows the user know that you are providing a simple, step by step guide as well as a check list, just exactly what the first timer wants to have.
